Fitzgerald was a midwestern Irish Catholic and the appeal of Fitzgerald's third novel an American classic captures romance, the glamour, and the riotous frivolity of the jazz age of the 20’s in America. The wealth and habits of a group of NewYorkers.Gatsby's lavish weekly summer parties are over the top, ridiculous, peopled with drunks and poseurs, and yet they seem like parties to which we wish we'd been invited. Fitzgerald's writing is unassailably magnificent, as he paints a grim portrait of shallow characters who manoeuvere themselves into complex situations. Some characters do express racial and religious prejudice. The book was light and easy to read to start with but did get deeper. it was not the real love story as first expected. members scored 8/10 |
