This is a fictional account of Shakespeare's son, Hamnet, who died at age 11 in 1596 in Stratford-upon-Avon. On a summer's day in 1596, a young girl takes to her bed with a sudden fever. Her twin brother, Hamnet, searches everywhere for help. Why is nobody at home? Their mother is over a mile away, in the garden where she grows medicinal herbs. Their father is working in London. Neither parent knows that Hamnet will not survive the week. Four or so years later, Shakespeare wrote the play Hamlet considered by many to be his greatest work, giving its tragic hero a variation of his dead son’s name. This is a book about grief, and the means by which people find their way through it. There is great tenderness too. Most of the group enjoyed the book and it was scored 8 |
