A 30 year old, is alone in this world and has no friends. She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. She has no aspirations.
Two things kick start Eleanor’s journey. The first is the arrival of a new work colleague Ray, who sees through Eleanor’s stony façade as they bond while helping a pensioner. The second is Eleanor’s decision to get herself a man, someone who “Mummy” will approve of.
It is without a doubt one of the most incredible, profoundly sad, and well written novel.
All the group enjoyed it and it was scored average 8.5
